BUSINESS FUNDING, EXPLAINED

What is a merchant cash advance?

A merchant cash advance (MCA) provides upfront funds for a business that accepts debit and credit card payments. The provider agrees a total amount payable and collects an agreed share of qualifying receipts until that amount is settled.

It is also called a business cash advance or card-sales funding. On a percentage-based arrangement, collections rise and fall with eligible sales. This differs from a conventional loan instalment, but the deductions still reduce cash available for wages, suppliers and tax.

PDQ Funding helps you submit an enquiry and understand the available terms. The provider assesses the business and decides whether to offer funding.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

A £100 card sale.

With an agreed repayment percentage of 10%:

Card payment
£100
Repayment to the lender
£10
Remaining for your business*
£90

Illustration only, not an offer. The 10% is a share of sales, not an interest rate. Actual costs and terms depend on the lender. *Before card-processing fees.

YOUR NEXT BUSINESS STEP

What can a merchant cash advance fund?

Stock & supplies

Buy goods ahead of a planned trading period. Match the purchase and collection schedule to realistic demand. Read about stock finance.

Equipment

Replace machinery, tools or kitchen equipment. Include installation and downtime, and compare a separate equipment finance quotation where appropriate.

Premises

Plan a shop, salon or venue refit. Include the cost of closure and reopening in your budget. See our expansion funding guide.

Working capital

Cover a defined timing gap in operating payments. Forecast how the gap will close after repayments. Compare working capital funding.

HOW MUCH CAN I BORROW?

How much merchant cash advance funding can I get?

The amount offered depends on qualifying card turnover, trading history, existing finance and the provider’s assessment. Ask for the amount and terms in writing.

Build the request around a costed business need. Include current repayments and quieter trading periods, rather than assuming an advertised maximum or a set multiple of monthly takings will be available.

What shapes an offer?

  • Recent card turnover and consistency of sales
  • How long your business has been trading
  • The amount requested and intended use
  • Existing finance and the lender’s criteria

A future top-up is a separate funding decision, not an automatic entitlement.

UNDERSTAND THE COMMITMENT

How much does a merchant cash advance cost?

Compare three figures: the funds received, the funding fee and the total payable. A factor rate expresses a multiplier, rather than an annual interest rate.

For illustration, £27,000 multiplied by 1.28 gives £34,560 payable: a difference of £7,560 before any other charges. The percentage deducted from sales is a separate figure.

Check settlement terms, collection rules and guarantees alongside the price. For a fuller calculation, read our merchant cash advance costs guide.

REASONS TO CONSIDER A CASH ADVANCE

Merchant cash advance benefits and risks

Repayments linked to sales

A percentage-based collection moves with eligible receipts. This may suit variable takings, but minimum payments or other contractual conditions can still apply.

Compare the alternatives

Compare the cost and cash-flow effect with a loan before deciding. Our MCA versus business loan guide explains the differences.

Prepare your trading records

Providers assess recent sales and financial information. Have merchant statements, bank records and existing borrowing details ready; document requirements vary.

Understand personal obligations

An unsecured advance can still require a personal guarantee. Read the guarantee and default conditions and consider independent advice before signing.

COULD IT FIT YOUR BUSINESS?

Who can apply for a merchant cash advance?

Sole traders, partnerships and limited companies with qualifying card sales can enquire. Eligibility depends on the provider’s trading-history, sales, credit and affordability requirements.

Explain every payment channel: shop terminals, online checkout, deposits and other settlement accounts. If customers mainly pay by invoice or bank transfer, a business loan or another structure may be more appropriate.

Our industry finance directory includes guidance for restaurants, retail shops and garages.

THE PRACTICAL DETAILS

Merchant cash advance FAQs

How much can I get through a merchant cash advance?

The provider assesses qualifying card receipts, trading history, existing finance and affordability. Start with a costed requirement. An advertised maximum or one month’s turnover does not establish your offer.

How long must my business have been trading?

Minimum trading periods vary by provider and product. Prepare recent bank and merchant statements so the provider can assess a genuine sales record. A business without trading receipts needs a different funding assessment.

Can I get a merchant cash advance with bad credit?

Some providers may consider adverse credit alongside current trading, but acceptance is not guaranteed. Explain the issue and existing commitments. Ask what checks and guarantees are required before applying.

Will applying affect my personal or business credit file?

Search and reporting practices vary. Ask which company or personal checks take place, whether they are soft or hard searches, and how the facility or arrears may be reported. See our personal credit guide.

How quickly can I receive the money?

Timing depends on complete documents, provider assessment, acceptance and completion checks. An initial quote is not a guarantee of approval or payment. Confirm funding before committing to a supplier deadline.

What happens to repayments when card sales fall?

A percentage-based collection normally falls when qualifying receipts fall. The total commitment remains. Check minimum payment, reconciliation and default conditions, including what happens during a temporary closure.

How long does it take to repay a merchant cash advance?

The duration depends on sales and the agreement. Higher eligible sales can clear the balance sooner; weaker sales can extend the collection period. Ask about estimated duration, contractual deadlines and minimum payment obligations.

Is the collection percentage the same as the funding fee?

No. The collection percentage determines how much is taken from eligible sales. The funding fee determines the cost of the advance. Compare net funds received, all charges and the total amount payable. Read our cash advance costs guide.

Can I repay early and save on fees?

Ask for a written settlement figure. A fixed funding fee may remain payable even when the balance is cleared early. Check whether extra payments are allowed and whether any discount or charge applies.

Do I need to change my card machine or payment processor?

It depends on compatibility with the proposed facility. Explain your terminals, processors and settlement accounts before applying. Check any processing contract changes and fees separately from the finance cost.

Can online, Shopify or multiple-location card sales qualify?

They may qualify where the provider accepts the payment route and can verify the receipts. Identify all platforms and locations and confirm which transactions count. See our ecommerce funding page and Shopify funding guide.

Can I qualify if customers mainly pay cash or by bank transfer?

A conventional card-sales advance needs qualifying card receipts. Cash and invoice receipts do not automatically count towards that calculation. Explain how customers pay and compare business loan options if card takings are limited.

Does unsecured mean there is no personal guarantee?

No. A facility without a charge over a particular asset can still require a personal guarantee. Read its scope and consider independent advice before agreeing to personal liability.

Can I get a top-up or take another advance?

Further funding requires assessment and is not automatic. Disclose existing advances and check restrictions on additional borrowing. Compare the new total payable and the combined deductions from sales.

What if my business closes or cannot meet the agreement?

Contact the provider promptly and explain the situation. A closure does not automatically cancel the balance or a guarantee. Review the contract and seek independent support before taking on additional debt.

Is a merchant cash advance the same as a business loan?

No. The contractual structure, pricing and collections can differ. Compare actual offers rather than product names, including costs, repayment dates and personal obligations. See cash advances versus business loans.

Are merchant cash advances FCA regulated?

Do not assume a provider’s FCA status means every facility has the same protections. The firm, activity and actual agreement matter. Check these before accepting; our UK regulation guide explains the questions to ask.

Does PDQ Funding charge for arranging an enquiry?

PDQ Funding is a broker, not a lender. We do not charge for using our brokerage service and receive lender commission following a successful introduction. The provider decides the offer and terms; you do not have to accept.
