Existing finance does not produce an automatic approval or refusal for a merchant cash advance. The provider needs to assess all commitments and check contractual restrictions. If you already have an MCA, confirm the rules before switching card processors or changing where sales settle.
Can you apply with an existing business loan?
You can discuss an enquiry, but disclose loans, overdrafts, advances and other material finance. Show outstanding balances, payment amounts and any security or consent requirements. The provider decides whether further funding is available.
Existing agreements may restrict additional borrowing or changes to payment arrangements. Review these before accepting another offer. Do not assume that a new provider’s approval releases obligations to an existing one.
What if you already have a merchant cash advance?
A second advance, renewal and refinance are different structures. Ask whether the proposal replaces the current agreement or creates another commitment. Multiple collections from the same receipts can reduce working cash substantially.
For illustration, two separate collections of 10% and 15% applied to the same £10,000 of qualifying sales would total £2,500, before processing fees and operating costs. Actual definitions and collection arrangements may differ. This is not an endorsement of overlapping advances.
Read our renewals and refinancing guide before comparing offers.
Can you change your card processor while repaying?
It depends on the agreement and collection method. Some arrangements require the current processor to remain in place. Others may permit a change only after approval and revised collection arrangements. Obtain the provider’s written requirements before signing a new processing contract.
A processor change can affect how collections are calculated and received. A new terminal or merchant account does not remove the existing funding obligation.
Checks before a processor or settlement change
- Review clauses covering processors, merchant IDs, bank accounts and qualifying receipts.
- Tell the finance provider the proposed change and intended date.
- Ask whether written consent, a new collection instruction or settlement is required.
- Confirm compatibility, timing and any charges with both payment providers.
- Obtain written confirmation of the agreed transition.
- Reconcile sales, collections and settlement statements during the change.
Do not cancel existing collection arrangements or move receipts to avoid deductions. If the proposed switch cannot be approved, ask what alternatives or settlement terms are available.
What information should you prepare?
- Current finance agreements and recent balance statements.
- Details of existing deductions and repayment schedules.
- Merchant IDs, processor names and settlement accounts.
- The proposed processor’s details and migration timetable.
- Recent bank and card statements and a cash-flow forecast.

Frequently asked questions
Does changing bank accounts stop an MCA obligation?
No. It does not itself release the contract. Check consent and notification requirements first.
Will a cheaper processor make refinancing worthwhile?
Assess processing savings alongside settlement costs, new finance charges and any transition costs. A lower processing fee alone does not establish an overall saving.
What if collections are causing difficulty?
Contact the finance provider early. Read our falling sales and repayment difficulties guide before making unilateral changes.
