Merchant Cash Advance Renewals, Top-Ups & Refinancing

A merchant cash advance renewal or top-up means requesting further funding. Refinancing involves replacing an existing commitment with a new arrangement. Neither is automatic: the provider must assess the request and explain how the current balance and new funding will be treated.

Renewal, top-up or refinance: what is the difference?

TermWhat to establish
RenewalWhether a new advance starts after the existing funding is cleared or overlaps with it.
Top-upWhether this is additional funding, a replacement agreement or a drawdown from an agreed facility.
RefinancingWhich existing obligation is settled, by whom, and what new commitment replaces it.

Providers use these terms differently. Read the actual offer rather than relying on its label.

When can you request more funding?

Criteria vary. A provider may review repayment performance, the remaining balance, current sales and existing commitments. Some arrangements permit an early renewal before the first advance is cleared; others require repayment first.

There is no universal percentage of repayment that guarantees eligibility. Ask for the criteria relevant to your agreement, and use our eligibility checklist to prepare updated information.

Compare the new money reaching your account

Suppose a replacement advance is £30,000 and £8,000 must settle the old funding. That leaves £22,000 before other deductions. If the new agreement requires £37,500 total repayment, assess that commitment alongside the actual new cash received. These figures are illustrative only.

This example describes a replacement structure. It is not how every renewal works. Some arrangements keep the earlier balance in place and alter the order or percentage of collections.

Questions to resolve before accepting

  • What is the dated settlement amount for the existing funding?
  • How much new cash will reach the business after deductions?
  • What total amount will remain payable across all agreements?
  • Will collections overlap, change percentage or continue sequentially?
  • Are there additional fees, minimum payments or repayment deadlines?
  • Do guarantees or indemnities continue or change?
  • Who confirms that the old agreement and payment arrangements have ended?

Does refinancing reduce the cost?

Not necessarily. A fixed fee on the original advance may not reduce in proportion to early settlement, while replacement funding may introduce a new cost. Compare keeping the existing arrangement with the complete replacement proposal using the same funding requirement.

A lower daily collection may help immediate cash flow but can coexist with a larger total commitment. Read our factor rates and repayments guide rather than comparing percentages alone.

When sales are already under pressure

Identify why extra funding is needed and whether it supports a realistic trading plan. Repeated renewals to cover a continuing operating shortfall can increase financial pressure. Review our repayment difficulties guide and speak to the existing provider before seeking replacement funding.

Frequently asked questions

Is a renewal guaranteed after a good repayment record?

No. Current criteria and the business’s position still matter.

Can I refinance with a different provider?

It may be possible, subject to assessment, settlement terms and existing restrictions. Obtain written details before proceeding.

Can I use the calculator for a top-up?

Our calculator models a single advance. It does not account for settlement deductions or overlapping agreements.
